My 6-step Formula to Craft The Perfect Networking Email
(Even if you're scared of reaching out)
A strong networking email can help you:
✅ Get responses from industry professionals
✅ Land informational interviews that lead to referrals
✅ Increase your chances of securing your first data science job
The problem?
Most networking emails get ignored.
But after analyzing 50+ emails I received, I’ve distilled a simple, 6-step framework to craft emails that actually get responses.
Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Make a strong first impression
Start with a subject line that’s clear and engaging.
Example: "Loved Your Work on [Topic] – Quick Question"
Step 2: Show genuine interest
Mention a specific project, article, or talk they’ve done that resonated with you.
Example: "Your post on deploying ML models efficiently really helped me understand a key challenge in productionizing models."
Step 3: Establish common ground
Briefly introduce yourself and why their insights matter to you.
Example: "I’m a recent data science graduate focused on ML deployment, and I’d love to learn from your experience."
Step 4: Make a clear, low-friction ask
Keep your request simple—people are busy. Instead of a vague “Can I pick your brain?”, ask for specific advice.
Example: "If you were entering data science today, what’s one thing you’d do differently?"
Step 5: Keep it short and action-oriented
Your email should be concise (3-5 sentences max) and easy to respond to.
(Bonus) Step 6: Offer value in return
If possible, share a relevant insight, resource, or discussion that might be useful to them.
Example Email Template:

I know you're busy, so even a short reply would mean a lot. Thanks for your time!
Best,
